Martin Edenhofer is best known as the inventor of OTRS. A professional open source pioneer and geek since 1999, Martin started OTRS in November 2001 when he moved from Nuremberg where he worked to SUSE Linux to Frankfurt where he started to work for Lufthansa.
Martin believes in the power of open source. He saw the opportunity to create a 100% plug able and modular application which is designed and focused to help users. He got much spare time in Frankfurt to invent the software and to setup a real open source community project. OTRS is the largest ticket system/issue tracking system worldwide with over 100.000 productive installations.
In 2001, exactly on November the 2nd 2001, Martin started to write the first lines of code for OTRS.
In 2002, in March the 11th he released the first official release of OTRS (OTRS 0.5 beta1).
In 2003, he did his first business consulting with OTRS, by replacing ARS Remedy with OTRS 1.0 for the a german bank (in this place, thanks to Alfons Obermeyer). Later this year he co-founded the OTRS GmbH to provide commercial services for OTRS.
In 2004, the 1. place in “Open Source Best Practice Award” of the Fraunhofer Institut in the category “public range” went to the city “Muelheim an der Ruhr” for the HelpDesk solution with OTRS.
In 2005, the open source business world has changed. It went out, that NASA is using OTRS. From now on open source business solutions are well accepted. Nobody asked anymore if the business module is really working.
In 2007, the service company OTRS GmbH finally moved to OTRS AG.
Today, Martin loves to talk about open source, business, ethics and possible opportunities. Just contact him, he will always reply.
